Cushion Cushion is the key to comfort in all of your furniture. The padding provided in your mattress, living room furniture, even your office chair is provided by some kind of Cushion. There is foam, cotton batting or wool batting for padding. In years gone by even horse hair was used to stuff sofas. For detailed furnishings information see www.Bed-and-Mattress.com. The Cushion in a traditional mattress is provided by coil springs topped with foam, cotton or polyester batting and finally a quilted top. There are several alternatives to this option. Foam creates a soft bed. An air mattress surrounded by padding can provide a either a firm or soft bed with the addition or removal of air. The Cushion in your sofa also uses the resilience of coil springs. This is what prevents your sofa from compressing and having a sagging appearance over time. The springs are covered by foam and batting to comfort the body seated on the sofa. Most simple chairs use only foam as the surface area is much less than a sofa. The smaller surface area will spring back without the advantage of springs.
